We can’t believe it’s been nearly a year of iglu book club! Whether you've joined us every month or just once, thank you for being part of our special community.
In our July session we discussed Giovanni’s Room. It was a pleasure to dissect James Baldwin’s bleak yet beautiful second novel. If you’d like to bask in the literary genius glow a little further, here is a link to a famous interview between James Baldwin and Maya Angelou, who met in 1950’s Paris where the novel is set.
What we’re reading in August
Our August book club pick is the poignant epistolary novel, The Correspondent, by Virginia Evans. This is Virginia’s debut novel, published after SEVEN completed manuscripts that couldn’t find a home. Winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2026, a No1 Sunday Times bestseller, No1 New York Times bestseller - this novel is thought provoking, warm, witty and cleverly constructed.
Sybil Van Antwerp is seventy-three, slowly losing her sight and always writing letters… To her children. Her favourite authors. Her ex-sister-in-law. The journalist poking into her past. Her doctor. Suitors. Kindly neighbours. The infuriating gardening club. All receive Sybil’s witty, wise correspondence, rich with everyday concerns. But there is one letter that she has never sent. It concerns the darkest period of her life. To post it, Sybil must find forgiveness within herself. The hardest letter to write is the one you’d never dare to send.
